The aesthetic appeal of an event can make or break an event. A large part of planning and logistics of any event is how the space will look. The theme must be omnipresent at the event so that people know what the event is about and that they are in the right place! It also sets the mood for an event. Could you imagine if there were no ribbons, no balloons, no poster, no leaves? The mood would have been quite different; stale and bland maybe. The mood set by design and aesthetics will set the tone for the whole event.Given the little resources and time we had to create the mood for this event, I was happy with the results.
I agree. It is amazing how much mood can be changed by a few streamers and a dozen balloons. Changing mood in the our classes could be just as easy and we could change things to emphasize celebration, relaxation, or anything really!
ReplyDeleteWhen I teach leadership, we use a book that talks about thinking/leading symbolically. Superb principals are masters of the symbolic, bringing rituals and meaning to their schools through assemblies, celebrations, etc. For seven years I taught in a lovely school that had a foyer big enough for the whole school to gather and listen to stories or sing songs together (I always led the Christmas singing!). Different classes decorated the foyer for different seasons and so visitors and students were always welcomed with bright and interesting things as they came in the door. I think that helped to set the tone, just as you and Michael have mentioned, for a positive thinking about belonging to the community.I thought the baskets of leaves and the theme were original, elegant, and manageable...very lovely!
